This is your first time trekking Ijen Crater? This is a checklist of equipment, physical and mental equipment that must be prepared so that your trip is smooth and safe.
Trekking Ijen Crater is not a high mountain climb, but the terrain is still challenging for beginners — rocky uphill paths, cold temperatures, and exposure to sulfur gas. So that your first trip goes smoothly, here is a complete checklist that must be prepared.
1. Physical Equipment
Trekking shoes with good grip — avoid sandals or slippery shoes.
Thick jacket / windbreaker because early morning temperatures can reach 5°C.
Gloves and buff/mask to protect from cold air and sulfur gas.
Headlamp or flashlight because the route is completely dark before dawn.
2. Physical preparation
Even though you don't need extreme stamina, it is advisable to get used to walking or light exercise a few days before departure. The 3 km long uphill route can be tough for those who rarely do physical activity.
3. Gas Mask: Mandatory or Optional?
It is highly recommended to bring a special gas mask or at least a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth when approaching the crater area, because the concentration of sulfur gas can be quite thick depending on the wind direction.
4. Additional Logistics
Drinking water at least 1 liter.
Energy snacks such as chocolate or biscuits.
Small cash for entrance ticket and mask/flashlight rental if you haven't brought your own.
5. Mentality and Expectations
The route down to the bottom of the crater to see the blue fire up close is challenging and slippery. Always follow the guide's directions, don't push yourself if you are not physically fit, and enjoy the process - the view of the sunrise from the crater rim is very satisfying even if you don't go down to the bottom.
So that your preparations are more complete, the Enthusiast Picnic guide team will provide a complete briefing before the climb and provide recommendations for rental equipment at the location. Check out our Ijen Crater trekking packages and start your first adventure safely.
