3 Warna Beach is an ecotourism and marine conservation area located in Tambakrejo Village, Sumbermanjing Wetan District, Malang Regency, East Java. Located in the Clungup Mangrove Conservation (CMC) area, this beach is famous for its natural phenomenon in the form of three gradations of sea water color—dark blue, green and turquoise—which is caused by variations in the depth and composition of coral reefs on the seabed. Different from other coastal destinations, 3 Warna Beach implements a system of limiting visitors to a maximum of 100 people per day or around 10 groups, making it a conservation area that is very natural. Management of this area is carried out independently by local tourism awareness community groups (Pokdarwis) who focus on preserving coral reefs and mangrove forests.
The Uniqueness of the Three Gradations of Ocean Color Phenomenon
The main attraction of 3 Colors Beach lies in the optical phenomenon of its waters which display three different colors. The dark blue color represents deep water areas (sea trenches), the green color shows shallow areas with marine vegetation and mud deposits, while the turquoise color reflects the expanse of clean white sand mixed with healthy living coral reefs at the bottom of the water. This gradation is most optimally seen during sunny weather conditions during the day, especially when the sun's position is directly above sea level.
Coral Reef and Snorkeling Conservation Area
3 Warna Beach functions as a Marine Protected Area which is focused on coral reef rehabilitation. The water conditions are calm and free from big ocean waves, because it is blocked by Sempu Island, making this beach an ideal point for snorkeling activities. Various species of marine life, including clownfish (Amphiprioninae) and sea anemones, can be found hiding among the protected corals. Visitors are required to rent snorkeling equipment and use life jackets and are strictly prohibited from stepping on or touching the coral.
Clungup Mangrove Forest Hiking Trail
To reach the edge of 3 Warna Beach, tourists must pass through the Clungup Mangrove Conservation area. The journey continues with trekking on foot for around 30 to 40 minutes through 73 hectares of mangrove forest and hilly routes. Along this cross-country route, visitors will also pass several other beautiful beaches in the same area, such as Clungup Beach and Gatra Beach. The trekking route has been well arranged, providing ecological education while offering views of the lush natural coast of South Malang.
Implementation of a Zero Waste System
As an area that prioritizes conservation, the management applies very strict baggage regulations to prevent the entry of rubbish into the sea and beach areas. Before starting trekking, officers will record every visitor's belongings that have the potential to become rubbish, such as plastic bottles, food wrappers and tissues. On the way home, officers will check again and match the amount of rubbish brought back. Violations of this rule will be subject to quite large administrative fines, so that the cleanliness of 3 Colors Beach is always guaranteed to be 100 percent free from plastic waste pollution.
Location, Accessibility and Best Time to Visit
3 Warna Beach is around 70 kilometers from the center of Malang City, which can be reached in a land journey of around 2 to 2.5 hours. The route leads south through Turen District to Sumbermanjing Wetan District until arriving at the Clungup Mangrove Conservation entry post. The best time to visit 3 Colors Beach is in the dry season, between May and October, when there is minimal rainfall so the sea water is very clear and the color gradients look contrasting. Due to the quota system limiting 100 visitors per day, tourists are required to make reservations well in advance, at least one week before the arrival date, through the management's official contact.
